\u201cAnd the people of Nineveh believed God\u2026\u201d \u2014 Jonah 3:5<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Revival is not merely a large gathering, emotional worship, or an increase in church attendance. True revival begins when hearts turn back to God. It brings conviction, repentance, prayer, transformation, and a renewed hunger for the presence of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The story of Jonah and Nineveh<\/strong> is one of the most powerful pictures of city-wide revival recorded in the Bible. One reluctant prophet, one wicked city, one urgent message, and one extraordinary response show us that God can transform an entire community when His people obey His voice and proclaim His Word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God said to Jonah:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cArise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.\u201d \u2014 Jonah 1:2<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Nineveh was known for its wickedness and violence. Yet God did not simply abandon the city. He sent a messenger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This reveals something important about revival: God’s heart is for people.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Before revival comes to a city, God often places that city on the heart of His servants. Revival begins when we see people not merely as sinners to be condemned, but as souls who need God’s mercy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God saw Nineveh before Jonah reached Nineveh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Likewise, God sees our cities, villages, families, schools, colleges, workplaces, and communities. There are people waiting to hear the Gospel and encounter the transforming power of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revival begins with the burden of God becoming the burden of His people.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Instead of going to Nineveh, Jonah went in the opposite direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jonah 1:3 says that Jonah \u201crose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Jonah was not simply running from a place. He was running from an assignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes the greatest obstacle to revival is not the darkness of the world but the reluctance of God’s people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We may say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n But God still says, \u201cArise, go.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Revival requires people who are willing to leave their comfort zones and enter places where the Gospel is desperately needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jonah’s journey through the great fish was not merely a punishment. It became a place of correction, surrender, and prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Inside the fish, Jonah prayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThen Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish’s belly.\u201d \u2014 Jonah 2:1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Before Jonah could influence a city, God had to deal with Jonah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is a powerful principle of revival:<\/p>\n\n\n\n God often prepares the messenger before He releases the message.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Revival cannot be separated from personal consecration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before asking God to change our city, we must allow Him to change us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before praying for others to repent, we must examine our own hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before asking God to revive the nation, we must cry:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cLord, revive me first.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n After Jonah prayed, God gave him another opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying, Arise, go unto Nineveh\u2026\u201d \u2014 Jonah 3:1\u20132<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This time Jonah obeyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He went to Nineveh and proclaimed the message God had given him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His message was simple and urgent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.\u201d \u2014 Jonah 3:4<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Jonah did not preach an elaborate revival strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He simply delivered the Word of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And something extraordinary happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSo the people of Nineveh believed God.\u201d \u2014 Jonah 3:5<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Revival begins when God’s Word is proclaimed and people respond to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The response in Nineveh was remarkable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From the greatest to the least, the people humbled themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The king heard the message. He came down from his throne, laid aside his royal robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then he issued a proclamation throughout the city:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cLet neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water.\u201d \u2014 Jonah 3:7<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This was not merely a religious meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n An entire city was confronted by God.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Revival crossed social boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It reached:<\/p>\n\n\n\n When genuine revival comes, it does not remain inside a building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revival moves into the streets, homes, institutions, communities, and society.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The people of Nineveh did not merely become emotionally moved by Jonah’s preaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They repented<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The king declared:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBut let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way.\u201d \u2014 Jonah 3:8<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Notice the words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cry mightily unto God.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Turn from the evil way.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n That is revival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revival is not simply excitement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revival is conviction followed by repentance and transformation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n There is a difference between being moved and being changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nineveh was changed because the people responded to the Word of God with humility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The people repented, and God saw their response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil\u2026\u201d \u2014 Jonah 3:10<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The city deserved judgment, but God showed mercy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This demonstrates the power of repentance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A city can change direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A family can change direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A generation can change direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A nation can change direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When people turn from their sinful ways and seek God, His mercy can transform their future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jonah was only one man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He did not have a large organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He did not have modern technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He did not have social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He did not have a massive team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He had a message from God and the responsibility to obey it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Yet God used him to reach Nineveh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This should encourage every believer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Never underestimate what God can do through one surrendered life.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n One preacher can reach a village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One youth can ignite prayer among other young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One family can become a testimony in a community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One church can become a prayer centre for a city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One generation can become a revival generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The question is not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHow many people do I have?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAm I willing to obey God?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The story of Nineveh is filled with humility and prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The people \u201ccried mightily unto God.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n They did not depend on their political power, wealth, military strength, or human wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They turned toward God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is one of the foundations of revival:<\/p>\n\n\n\n A praying Church becomes a powerful instrument in the hands of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If we want to see our cities revived, we must begin by praying for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Nineveh revival was not confined to a meeting hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The people changed their ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is the evidence of genuine revival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When revival comes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Families are restored.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Addictions are broken.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Young people find purpose.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Broken lives receive hope.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n People turn away from sin.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Prayer becomes a priority.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The Gospel is proclaimed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Compassion for the lost increases.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Communities begin to change.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Revival should affect both the spiritual condition of people<\/strong> and the moral condition of society<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is another important lesson in the book of Jonah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jonah became angry when God showed mercy to Nineveh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because Jonah wanted judgment, while God wanted mercy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God asked him:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd should not I spare Nineveh, that great city?\u201d \u2014 Jonah 4:11<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This is perhaps one of the deepest revival lessons in the entire story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Revival requires us to have God’s heart for people.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We cannot genuinely pray for revival while secretly desiring the destruction of those who need salvation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God’s heart is bigger than our boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His mercy reaches people we may not expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His grace reaches communities we may have given up on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His Gospel reaches people whom society considers unreachable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nineveh looked like an impossible mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But God had already prepared the city to hear the message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This should change how we pray for our cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We should never say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThere is no hope for this place.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Instead, we should say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cGod can revive this place.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We should never say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThese people will never change.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We should pray:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cLord, turn their hearts toward You.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We should never say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe darkness is too great.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We should declare:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe light of Christ can shine in the darkness.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The story of Jonah is not merely an ancient story about a prophet and a city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is a call to the Church today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are modern Ninevehs waiting for messengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are cities waiting for prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are villages waiting for the Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are young people searching for hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are families waiting for restoration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are communities waiting for transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And God is still saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cArise, go\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The greatest need of our generation is not merely more programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is revived people carrying the burden of God for a lost world.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Let us become a generation that prays like Nehemiah, obeys like Jonah after his surrender, believes like the people of Nineveh, and carries the heart of God for the lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps the most important question is not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhen will revival come to our city?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhen will revival begin in me?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Let us return to prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Let us return to the Word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Let us return to holiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Let us return to obedience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Let us return to compassion for souls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Let us return to the Great Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then let us arise and go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because there may be a Nineveh waiting on the other side of our obedience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One messenger.
