These awakenings remind us that revival is not primarily about large meetings or emotional experiences—it is about prayer, repentance, the work of the Holy Spirit, transformed lives, and the spread of the Gospel.

One of the most significant periods of revival occurred in the early twentieth century, particularly around 1905–1906, when spiritual awakenings were reported in the Mukti Mission in Maharashtra and the Khasi Hills of Northeast India. (Christian History Institute)

The Mukti Revival of 1905

A central figure in this story was Pandita Ramabai, who established the Mukti Mission near Pune as a home and refuge for women and girls. In early 1905, Ramabai and others began calling people to pray earnestly for revival. Hundreds eventually participated in regular prayer meetings. (Revival Library)

On 30 June 1905, a remarkable spiritual awakening was reported at Mukti. Prayer, weeping, confession of sin, repentance, and manifestations associated with the Holy Spirit became prominent. The revival spread among the girls and women and subsequently influenced other Christian communities. (Springer)

The important lesson is that the revival was preceded by persistent prayer. People were not simply waiting for a special preacher or event. They were seeking God.

Revival in the Khasi Hills

Around the same period, Christians in the Khasi Hills of Northeast India were praying for revival after hearing reports of the Welsh Revival. Prayer meetings continued, and in 1905–1906 a significant awakening developed. Historical accounts describe repentance, renewed devotion, a desire for holiness, and an increased passion to bring others to Christ. Historical summaries describe revival movements extending beyond the Khasi Hills into surrounding regions. Revival begins with prayer

Before the visible manifestation of revival, there was a hidden work of prayer.

2. Revival requires repentance

True spiritual awakening produces conviction and a turning away from sin.

3. Revival produces evangelism

People who encounter God develop a greater burden for those who have not yet heard the Gospel.

4. Revival crosses boundaries

The Gospel reached different communities, regions, and social groups. Revival is never meant to remain confined to one congregation.

5. Revival transforms people

The purpose is not simply to create excitement but to produce holiness, compassion, obedience, and changed lives.

A Prayer for Revival in India

The history of Indian revival should not only be remembered—it should inspire us to pray again.

India is home to millions of people from diverse languages, cultures, communities, and backgrounds. The need for the Gospel remains great.

The prayer of Habakkuk can become our prayer:

“O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years.”

Let us pray for revival in our churches, revival among young people, revival in families, revival in villages and cities, revival among pastors and leaders, and above all, a fresh turning of hearts toward Jesus Christ.

The story of Mukti and the Khasi Hills reminds us that God can begin with a small group of praying people and use them to influence communities far beyond what they could imagine.

India needs a praying generation.

India needs a Gospel-preaching generation.

India needs a Holy Spirit-filled generation.

India needs a revival generation.

May the prayer rise from every corner of India:

“Lord, revive Your work in our generation.
